Gangster Girls

Power struggles, drug abuse, love affairs that end tragically: young women with faces covered in blue make-up launch themselves at each other with powerful eloquence. These are inmates at Schwarzau, the only women’s prison in Austria, and in weekly theatre workshop with prisoners from the Gerasdorf Youth Correction Facility they playfully reflect the lives, often producing quite different images of themselves than emerge from the strictly controlled interviews at their prison workplaces. GANGSTER GIRLS creates a dense photofit image of the situation of women behind bars, critically questioning the effects of the psychological disenfranchisement inflicted upon inmates in this artificial community.
